Matthew 7:12

"In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets."
Christian Based Selling:

The golden rule has served me well in business.  I treat everyone I meet at a prospective client as though they are the CEO.   You never know who has a bit of useful information or can connect you to a buyer.  For example, I have had many receptionists share what big projects are happening.  Why?  Because I treated them as an important person.  Why?  Because they are!

As a sales professional you are an ambassador to your company's brand.  If you think you are a big shot and treat everyone but your potential buyer as the little people, then you are creating a perception of arrogance that reflects on your company.  Some  companies pride themselves on a reputation of arrogance but I have never wanted to work for them.  These organizations are out of alignment with my soul.

When you treat everyone the same you are training yourself for when you do start meeting with C level executives.  You will find it less intimidating because you will be accustomed to not placing people above or below you.  You will be able to focus on doing your job and connecting in a genuine manner.

How have you applied the golden rule in business?

Ecclesiastes 11:6

"In the morning sow your seed, and at evening withhold not your hand, for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good."
Christian Based Selling:

We do not know which opportunities will turn into deals and which will not.   We need to be diligent in our prospecting efforts to continually fill the top of our pipeline so that as some deals are disqualified there are a sufficient number of opportunities that progress to close/win.  The top of the funnel is critical to success at the bottom.

Keeping up with prospecting can be a challenge when a deal or deals are moving to close.  While our focus is the strategy and activities for the the close, we need to remember to block out time to keep planting seeds so that our pipeline does not suffer.  Prospecting can offer a refreshing mental relief.

How do you balance your time between planting seeds and harvest?   What do you do to make prospecting fun?

Matthew 23:12

"Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."

Christian Based Selling:

If we allow our success to go to our head then we are not living our Christian values.  Our arrogance will distance us from God and most likely from our colleagues, friends and family.

As I've shared in previous posts, a sales career will inevitably have highs and lows.  I have found it important to enjoy your successful periods but never to lose your sense of urgency about finding and closing the next deal.  The organization may "exalt" you for your success--don't buy into the hype and be sure to credit your pursuit team colleagues who were undoubtably critical to the victory.

We need to be consistent in the focus and passion we bring to what needs to be done each day no matter if sales are up or down.  We must always be thankful to God for our success.

What things do you do to remain humble when the revenue is rolling in?

Proverbs 3:5-6

"Trust in the
Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."

Christian Based Selling:

We get emotionally attached to deals we want to win. We fight to keep our job when not enough deals have gone our way despite our best efforts. As sales professionals we walk a high wire act filled with both risk and reward. It is easy to feel that there is no safety net below us. However, if we trust in the Lord, work hard and honor Jesus in our words and actions then we are on His path for us. How can we worry about the road ahead if we put our trust in God?

Since I gave my life to Christ just six years ago I've learned to let go and let God lead. Shortly thereafter he removed a wife (divorce) and a job from my life. I felt my life was crumbling but I did not forsake God. I actually would talk to and laugh with God saying, "Really?! This is what you want for me???" I had thought by turning my life over to Him that He would fix things as I wanted them to be.

It was a difficult time but my world did not cease to exist and I was excited that God was in the driver's seat. It didn't matter what I thought of His plan for me, I was happy to be walking with Him for the first time in my life. Soon my life blossomed in new ways both professionally and personally. In hindsight I see that those changes needed to occur for me to evolve in the ways I needed. The journey continues and I'm filled with a passion for life and work like never before.

Conversation Starters:
Have you found strength in the Lord through professional trials? What was your toughest setback? What is your greatest comeback story?

Proverbs 16:23 ESV

"The heart of the wise makes his speech judicious
and adds persuasiveness to his lips."

Christian Based Selling:

When our "heart" is filled with truth, passion and conviction for the products/services we represent, then we will be at our best to differentiate ourselves from the competition. If you have reservations about your company's ability to deliver on your commitments, I would encourage you raise your concerns and/or to seek a new employer. Do not compromise your integrity or your reputation for a sale.

Have you been in a position in which you were in conflict with your heart? What did you do about it? Do you want to handle it the same or differently in the future?
